If
you go for a walk in Kos town you will realize that the old town resembles a huge
shopping complex. You encounter lots of nice shops located side by side with similar
goods. Whether you've decided to enjoy a shopping session or you are looking for
a holiday souvenir, Kos Town is home to the best selection of shops.
Here
you can find anything from tourist gifts and cheap clothes, all kinds of jewelry
and leather clothing and original products (La Coste and Tommy Hillfiger). There
is also a market that offers local products (fruits, vegetables, olive oil, honey,
red cheese, candied sweets, sweets made from tomatoes) and handicrafts.
Most
shops are open all day from 09:00 to 22:00 and rarely close for the afternoon
siesta. There are also some Greek local kiosks, called "periptero",
which remain open 24 hours a day offering snacks, magazines and some food.
The
center of shopping is on the streets and alleys that lead you to the historic
town square and to the Nymphaion Eleftherias.
Traditional
bakeries bewitch you every morning with unmistakable aroma of freshly baked bread.
Traditional arts and
crafts famous since ancient times, are widely available. Most shops accept major
credit cards.
If you
like traditional Greek music and need help to make the right choice, stop at one
of the Ti Amo Music Stores on the streets of EL. Venizelou and where Giorgos Hatzidimitris
Ipsilandou will help you find traditional or modern Greek music. You can sit and
listen before making a purchase in every store.
Even
if you do not want to spend too much money, you can not resist gold jewelry handmade
in N. Reiss store. The medallions are beautiful. They are designed and built by
father of Mrs. Reiss (with prices ranging from 60 to 125 Euros). Handmade rings,
charms and earrings are on display. For unusual ceramic pieces, visit his shop
or Lambis Pittas factory!
Other
treasures that you can take home are hand-painted Greek icons. Katapodis Panajiotis
painted dome icons for over 40 years, both for churches and for individuals. His
studio and home is on a wonderful hill at Ayios Nektarios (short distance from
the center of Kos) and visitors are welcome from April to October, Monday to Saturday
from 9am on 13 and 16 to 21. The road is signposted from the Roman House.
Hotels
offe to sell souvenirs and food that you could also find at boutiques in the pedestrian
streets of towns and villages on the island: Psalidi, Zipari, Asfendiou, Zia and
Lagoudi.
Kardamena
offers also fantastic shopping, including the market in Bodrum, if you make a
trip to Turkey on Tuesday.
Another
local product is cheese with wine (Posas tis news) and cheese made from goat milk
carefully prepared and maintained in red wine. The result is an amazing combination
of flavors that you can take home. If you make a stop in a villages near Kos,
taste the local drink with cinnamon and ask Soumada a refreshing drink of bitter
almonds!
