TO KOS ISLAND - YOUR GREEK KOS HOLIDAYS
Kos
island - a unique place in the world! Kos is a greek island and belongs to the
Dodecanese islands which are situated in the Aegean Sea. The
island is 40 km in length and 8 km in width and it is closer to Continental Turkey
than to continental Greece.
The
island has 20500 inhabitants and it is the second largest of the Dodecanese islands.
It has been inhabited since the year 3000 BC.
Kos
is probably the only island that can rival with Rhodes island's unique beauty
and charm. The Capital of the island, which is also called Kos, is located in
the northeast. Although a fairly modern city, Kos town has several locations where
valuable ruins dating from classical Greek and Roman periods are quite well preserved.
The main
tourist destinations of the island of Kos are Kardamena, Kefalos - a mountain
village perched above the sea that has many prehistoric ruins, Tingaki, Antimachia
- here you can see another castle of the Knights - Palaia Antimakhia, Seagulls,
Marmari and Pyli - here tourists may visit a St. John's knights' castle. Other
smaller settlements are Zia, Zipari - here you can see the beautiful basilica
of Ayios Pavlos, turntables, and Asfendiou Lagoudi - a charming mountain village.
The fertile lands of the island have attracted people since ancient times.
There
are three meanings to the island's name: The first one, Kion, meaning sheep in
the ancient greek language; the second meaning comes from Koos, the name of the
Kos princess, who had lived in the first capital of the island, Astihalea. It
is said that Hypocrates was also born in Astihalea. The third meaning of the name
means crab, the simbol of unification between little Asia and the Dodecanese islands.
The old
capital of the island was destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1933.
During
the peak of the season, during the night, the crowds are swiriling on the streets,
among palm trees, pines and gardens of jasmine. There is a perfect combination
of old and new on Kos island. For example, the bars street is situated near the
agora, which is illuminated at night by lasers and bright lights. There is a perfect
combination between culturalisation and fun.
Kos
Island is an ideal destination for families, for an educational vacation for students,
mountain climbing, or natural and religious therapies. Kos is particularly popular
during the summer, but many hotels operate all year-round. Many tourists prefer
a more peaceful period of low season.
The
seaside resorts, the bars, the clubs and the beaches are great, ready to fulfill
all fantasies. Save a little time but a to visit Kos island by scooter. The chalets,
the isolated beaches sheltered by lush groves and the quiet villages will impress
you. Resorts such as Seagulls and Marmari offer a mixture of perfect beaches and
rustic style. All the beaches on Kos island have been awared with the Blue Flag
for clean seas and for protecting the environment.
Being
close to Turkey, there are a lot of optional trips to Bodrum. It is a good destination
for shopping, if you want to scour stores a half day or all day.
There
are several villages that have been transformed into resorts and are worth visiting:
Platani, Agios Fokas, Tingaki, Pyli, Asfendiou, Antimachia. Tingaki is a small
resort on the island and the nightlife here is not as well represented. In Tangaki
on the other hand, tourists can enjoy calm waters and a small beach suitable for
families with children and attractive for water sports lovers. In the restaurants
you can find dishes based on seafood and Greek and international dishes. The summer
