KOS
ISLAND GREECE - OPTIONAL TRIP TO KEFALOS
Kefalos
lies in the south-west of Kos, 45 km from the capital of which is connected with
buses running at regular intervals.
Kefalos
is the most beautiful and famous beach on Kos island. The sand is white and there
are crystal blue waters. Agios Nikolaos monastery (which protects sailors) is
situated on the nearby Kastri island and you can get to it by swimming.
This
is the Paradise beach with the finest sand on Kos island. Forget the noise of
the big resorts and choose a resort that invites you to a lazy holiday!
You'll
find a sleepy holiday resort and a fishing village. Before reaching the beach
here, you can try other beautiful exotic beaches like Paradise beach, Camel and
Golden Beach. All theese are famous for water sports and sea bubbles! (Arising
from the nearby volcanic island). Kefalos Beach is best known for its fine sand
and calm sea refreshing waters, much quieter than the beaches on the north coast.
It is very well organized, offering swimming and sunbathing facilities (umbrellas,
sun beds), and water sports. Mountains with lofty peaks provide shade and there
is no deep water so it is ideal for children. To see the balloons you have to
do a little diving as they are not visible from the shore.
Walking
around Kefalos resort you will observe a traditional house that was transformed
into a popular museum with objects from the agricultural life of the village,
a traditional windmill and the ruins of an old castle.
In
Kamari port, at about 1 km from Kefalos, there is a fifth-century early Christian
church called Agios Stefanos, decorated with mosaics and sculptures.
To
see more sights on the island it is a good idea to rent a car.
There
are lots of good restaurants, especially the seaside taverns and do not forget
to try the local desserts made from local honey which are famous all over the
world. Nightlife is not as noisy as the capital of Kos, but there is always something
to do, you'll find lots of bars, some with live entertainment.
The
caves that you see on the way to Kefalos village are unique and have a historic
significance. It is said that during different occupations of the island, locals
hid in them and learned Greek, which was banned in schools for some time.
Accommodation
ranges from small studios furnished and self-catering apartments on the beach
to well equipped and luxurious hotels. Prices are for all pockets. More popular
hotels on the hills are offering a free minibus to the resort.
In the Palatia region,
situated 3 km south you will see the Astipalea ruins, the ancient capital of the
island and the ruins of the Dimitra temple - the goddess of agriculture (in the
5th century BC) and a theater in the Hellenistic age. On top of the hill you can
visit the church of Panagia Palatiani.
The
fun continues with festivals: Saint Paraskevi on July 26, the Virgin Mary on August
15 and St. John on August 29. In October, locals brimming with unbridled imagination
organize unforgettable Halloween parties.
